Fair Ladies

Medieval Fun Fact!
A woman was described as "fair" if she had unblemished skin, not only if she was very, very white.
Pale skin was the ideal in many countries, but for those ladies born with a Spanish or Italian complexion, her "fairness" was judged on her lack of acne, scarring, scrofula or other skin diseases, not her whiteness.
